Commemorative Cairn, Bli Bli State School

DescriptionA stone cairn erected in memory of Andrew Petrie, Stuart Russell and the convict explorers of the Maroochy district in 1842. Also dedicated to Tom Petrie, one of the first white men to explore the lands of the Gubbi Gubbi Peoples.
The cairn marks the 50th year of Queensland's separation from NSW. Headmaster R.D. Weeks and Councillor Cronholm chose the location outside the Bli Bli State School on the bank facing School Road. A time capsule was buried underneath, and the unveiling of the structure occurred on the 18th of September 1959 in front of pupils, parents, friends and visitors (Alcorn, B. 2001)
