Classic Cars on the Sunshine Coast

Collection SummaryWhen the first cars were introduced in Queensland around 1910, driving enthusiasts had to deal with dusty, rutted, unsealed tracks with little signage to guide them on their journey.

During 1921 refurbishments were made to the Hotel Maleny building and a second storey timber extension built on the Bunya Street frontage. The Burnett family owned the hotel at the time. Hotel Maleny was built by Harry Bate and Sam Sallaway in 1907, for Joseph Alfred Pollock, the first licensee, using locally pit sawn Beech timber. Model T Ford owners car rally (note numbers on headlights) are pictured gathered in Bunya Street outside the hotel. Note fuel tins cast aside in the gutters. The road leading to North Maleny can be seen in the background.
