Details
DescriptionCrew (centre) L to R: Normand Tetreaul, Captain Vital Alsar, Gabriel Salas and Marcel Modena. The men were greeted with cheers from a crowd of approximately 2,500 people as they were driven along Currie Street in a parade led by the Maroochy District Band. They had set out from Ecuador on 29 May 1970 on a raft made of balsa wood and hemp ropes to show that natives of South America could have crossed the Pacific Ocean to Australia many years ago. On completing their epic journey, their raft had been towed into Mooloolaba Harbour.
