Amelia (Emily) Luke completed nursing training in Brisbane after engaging in private nursing for some years. She established Sunny Brae Private Hospital at her home in Eumundi. Sunny Brae opened in January 1924 to support soldiers when they returned from the Great War.
In the following years Sunny Brae catered mainly for maternity patients, but a wide variety of general work was also undertaken. General work included treating injuries and respiratory complaints, nursing the elderly, teeth extractions and other minor surgery. Extra trained staff were engaged when required and some local young ladies served a probationary period before going on to nursing training in Brisbane.
